Knight Work

Next iteration.

I've carved some shape into his nose and added a hole for his eyes. Have you ever seen a modern art statue of a lady with a hole in her stomach? That's what I was aiming for.

Until I figure out a painless way to bevel the edges, we're done here.

Knight Moves

Here's my progress so far.

Figure 2 First cut at Zagreb Modernist knight.

Figure 3 The inspiration for my Zagreb Modern Knight. RIGHT, Berliner knight.  LEFT, Zagreb knight. [I can't make the pictures align properly in the published version. Sorry about that.]

I decided I like paraboloid bases better than cylinder & cone. I like the smooth look. The base is hollow to allow for putting a weight in the piece.

If anyone knows how to bevel or round edges, please let me know!

I wish this software had a feature for putting a bevel on edges. (Everybody's a critic. Right?) I insist on having no sharp edges. It's a key feature. I want the piece to be comfortable to hold and sharp edges will tend to chip.

That said, nibbling at them by hand is time consuming and probably will drive me to distraction and beyond.

How I got here.
  1. I tried making my knight from scratch in the 3D editor. This was frustrating, a learning experience, and I finally gave up.
  2. I drew the silouette of the knight in MS Paint, and stored it as a BMP file.
  3. I used Inkscape to convert the BMP into an SVG.
  4. I imported the SVG into Thinkercad and made an extrusion.
  5. The current state is shown in Fig. 2 after lots more fiddling about with the base.
