Unsolicited Endorsement

I recently ordered a set from Wholesale Chess http://www.wholesalechess.com/ They gave me excellent service.

I had a minor problem, which they fixed the day I discovered it. One of the rooks was broken. They shipped me a replacement, free of charge, the day I contacted them.

I recommend this outfit based on my happy experience.

No Printer

I don't have a printer yet.  If someone will make a set for me, I'll gladly cover costs and shipping. Please email me at the address in the sidebar.

Thanks,
Chess Knight

Two Rooks

All the pieces are uploaded to Thingverse.  My sign in name there is "Chess Knight".

I've caved to peer pressure and shaved 2mm off the rook so it's shorter than the knight.  Both the tall original and the short one are uploaded to Thingverse.

Here is the lineup without the short rook.

Modernist Chess Set - Final Verson (?)

The complete set in play.

"It's always the knight, isn't it?"

The knight is the hardest piece to design, so that is where I started.  Here's mine. In every image, the brown is the keeper and the white is the discarded first trial.

The new version is thinner and simpler than the first cut.  It takes after Berliner and Man Ray more than Staunton.

My pawn redo:

Now for the rest of the pieces, starting with the rook and ending with the king. Like the pawn, I went for a more robust look and feel.

The bishops appear identical.  All the changes are internal.

The bases are hollow with a rim around the opening, all the better to put in a do it yourself weight.  Perhaps BBs or metal washers stuck in with glue or silicone cement. I'll be searching for felt to make padding.  I regard weighting and felt pads necessary.

The pieces are hollow to reduce top hamper, and to reduce production time and materials.  All the walls are 3 mm thick or more to make the pieces robust.

New Pawn

The brown pawn is new.  I like it better.  The first pawn looked too spindly for my taste.  The rook has a scrawny neck too - a job for another day.

Complete Set

I'm uploading screen shots of the completed set.
Now the pawn... I'm making it just under 2/3 the height of the rook & knight, 42 mm. The base will be 18 mm, for a b/h = 43%. My intent is to leave enough room in the hollow base for DIY weights. Weighting the pieces ... I once used plaster of Paris to weight some hollow plastic pieces. I might do that again, except add BB shot to the mix. Alternatively, silicone cement or Gorilla Glue would do nicely as a matrix for those BBs. All the pieces have a hollow base with a rim around the hole to make weighting easy. Felt bases ... Felt is a necessity. I will be shopping local hobby supply stores to see what's available.
The Bishop The bishop's height will be 70 mm, with base to height ratio = 48%. All the pieces (except the king) will have 32 mm bases. That's just the way I roll.
